's look at these numbers. president obama still comfortably ahead. in fact, he's picked up a point. he's at 51%. mitt romney is at 43%. both campaigns think this one is getting more difficult by the moment for mitt romney to win. however -- and this is where it gets fascinating -- in virginia, the president's lead has shrunk to just two points, within the margin of error. last month president obama led by five points there. in florida, mitt romney has closed the gap as well. he's now statistically tied in the state of florida. it is a one-point lead. 47%-46%. al hunt, it is fascinating. ohio seems to be on its own as far as the swing states go. but we could show other swing state polls in colorado, in nevada, in north carolina. these states are really getting tight, to such a degree that a great performance by romney tonight could change the dynamic. >> conceivably, but i don't think it's quite that close yet. i think you certainly see it, as you point out, in florida and virginia. you don't see it in ohio. wisconsin it looks like it's actually widening. iowa, it's four to six. and the

. i was very supportive of both president bush and president obama in afghanistan, mainly because of the hope we can turn around what happens to women. we have the same problem we had in vietnam. when you're working with a corrupt government, people can't work to save themselves, you can't save them no matter what. we need to get out. >> the fight against al qaeda continues not only in afghanistan, but increasingly in north africa. the "washington post" is reporting the white house has held secret meetings to examine the terror group in the region. the al qaeda affiliate there is believed to have gained a large amount of weapons after the revolution in libya. and according to "the post," the white house meetings predate the attacks on the u.s. compound in libya and have included possible strikes against targets in north africa. i think it'll be interesting to hear how these issues are played out in one of the debates, which i believe is focused on foreign policy. i just want the candidates to be asked about this. >> there's also, mika, a front page in the "new york times" that eve

the tax breaks at year end gives republicans an incentive to act. presidents -- president obama has stated without equivocation that he will veto an extension of the tax cuts for the above must bracket. they may soon realize that it is far better to extend 98% of the tax cut than none at all. this story in today's "financial times" which i commend to you reading here but i didn't bring it. oh, yes, i did. it's right here. republicans shift tone on taxing the rich. and it suggests many republicans are reaching that conclusion. now, that would be the breakthrough tax reform needs. democrats should seize on this. it is interesting -- for years, many of my colleagues have fought to end of the reduced rate on the wealthiest americans in the context of the bush tax cut debate per yet suddenly, when the idea of cutting tax rates for the wealthy is peddled under the guise of tax reform, too many people forget their opposition to it. that makes no sense. the contradiction just goes to show how deep the nostalgia for the 1986 tax reform agreement is. and for the bipartisan cooperation that made it p
